Client needs more flexible support for syncing different directories #765
Comments
That is already possible, just not by default (which is the root folder sync). You can remove the original root sync, and define multiple arbitrary sync relations between server folders and local folders. |
Thank you, great work! Shame I didn't figure it out myself, however the first dialog reminds me very much of the simple clients offered by dropbox or canonical, so I didn't even expect this would work. |
@jancborchardt here for your info :-) |
Yeah, the initial version was only flexible and not simple. So now we made it simple foremost, with the ability to be flexible. Especially as the flexibility introduces problems/confusion as soon as you have multiple devices (does the second device sync everything? Folders in the same place?). I think more flexibility is good, but before we do that the basics have to be done. For instance #102 (file sync indicator icons in file manager) are a big blocker for more flexibility, because otherwise it is not very apparent what is synced and what not. |
The desktop client at the moment only seems to support to sync one dedicated directory with ownCloud, forcing users to re-design their directory structures by putting everything they want synced into this folder.
Instead, the client should offer to sync arbitrary directories on the desktop with arbitrary directories on ownCloud. Like this, users could sync software settings, fonts, chatlogs, actually anything that stores data in files.
