(Use Case Vocabulary) #3 Water wells

Summary

Wells (and associated boreholes?) designed to intercept groundwater in an aquifer or aquifers. This includes bores designed to:

  • extract groundwater for some use (agriculture, consumption, dewatering)
  • monitor or investigate groundwater

To clarify: Does this include injection wells? -> https://github.com/opengeospatial/boreholeie/issues/20

To clarify: is a well a borehole / a role / an intersection with the surface ? -> https://github.com/opengeospatial/boreholeie/issues/xx

Terms

Concept/Feature: Borehole (fr: Puits or Forage)

Definition

A borehole is the generalized term for any narrow shaft drilled in the ground. INSPIRE definition (removing ", either vertically, horizontally, or inclined." from the initial GeoSciML one).

Properties/Attributes

identifier

name

Owner

geolocalisation: X, Y, SRS

Elevation(s)

Natural surface elevation. Elevation from a reference (datum)

Nested borehole

In case of bores located in the same site or collocated in the same drill hole

Geo-resource available

Geologic Unit, Hydrogeo Unit, ...

Drill method

Details about the method used to drill hole (auger, percussion, down hole hammer, etc).

Date of drilling

Drilling began... drilling completed...

Status of hole

Current status of the well. functioning, decommissioned, collapsed, abandoned...

Date of decommissioning (also, Date of Abandon)

Decommissioned on by method of...

Well purpose

Purpose of well, e.g. extraction, injection, observation, dewatering, cathodic protection, decontamination, disposal, FlowingShot, Geotechnical, Mineral, MonitoringlevelHead, MonitoringQuality, Oil, OilExploratory, Seismic, WaterExploratory, etc.

Water use

Current use of the water extracted from the well : (E.g. Agricultural, Domestic, Industrial, Recreation.)

Concept/Feature: Construction (fr: aménagement)

Definition

Construction components of the water well, expressed as applying to discrete section sections of the borehole. Includes casing size and material, grouting, screened interval(s), gravel pack, etc.

Properties/Attributes

surface installation

Details of surface construction are out-of-scope ? -> https://github.com/opengeospatial/boreholeie/issues/17

Number of pipes constructed within hole

Casing (per pipe) (fr: tubage)

Since surface construction is out of scope, casing details need to include pipe stick-up. May be needed to convert measurements in to absolute elevations (e.g. above sea level)

sealing (fr: Coulis ? == grout ?)

Note: There is ambuiguities between sealing (grouting) the area between the casing and the borehole and completely sealing the well (permanently or temporarily abandoning it) . In the last case "plugging" may be used. Often use the same material (bentonite, cement, shale) but filling a different hole.

Grouting ( Sealing ?) (fr: scellement)

Procedure used to water/vermin proof the area between the casing and the borehole wall (see Annulus). Grouting prevent vertical movement of water between the aquifer and the surface, such as potentially contaminated water, gaz or organic matter that c. This is of particular importance in flood plains where large quantity of surface material can be mobilised from the flooded area.

Sealing (Grouting?) material

Material used to seal the space between the casing and the borehole walls. Eg bentonite, ciment

Plugging (fr: scellement ?)

Procedure to permanently or temporarily stop vertical movement of water inside or outside the casing.

Plugging material (Matériel de scellage)

Material used to plug the well (eg, ciment, shale, bentonite)

Pump (fr: Pompe)

Type, capacity, depth of pump if present

Probe (fr:Sonde)

Type, installation details, what is this probe measuring? [probe may be independent of the construction. Are probes and the data measured from them in scope? It seems to me that these are beyond the scope of describing the bore]

Concept/Feature: Borehole Log (fr: Journal de forage)

Definition

A description of a physical feature along the length of a borehole. May be continuous data (i.e. downhole geophysical) or discrete sections (i.e. geologist log). [Do we need separate concepts for continuous and discrete logs?]

Properties/Attributes

Log Type

Lithology, geological, gamma ray, resistivity ...

Log author

Driller, on-site geologist, technician, ...

Log date

Important where cores may be reinterpreted or downhole geophysics run some time after construction.

Log method

Interpretation from samples, measured from probe, ...

Concept/Feature: Bore yield (fr:Productivité du puits)

Definition

A measure of the volume of groundwater that can be extracted from the bore, in rate expressed as per . Includes information about the measurement of yield.

Properties/Attributes

Yield

Method of determining

Could link to a pump test

Concept/Feature: Various water levels

Definition

Various types of water level are measured

  • Strike Water : the water level you observed when you drill the hole
  • Rest Water Level : when you come back on the field after it rests a bit.
  • Pump Test : is another water level (but under human control)

Properties/Attributes

Method, Result,..

Concept/Feature: Pump test (fr: test de pompage)

Definition

A test of the constructed well to determine properties of the well and aquifer when the well is in operation. [There is a lot to cover in a pump test and a lot of variation in how it is performed and analysed. I think we need to make a decision on scope here. What is practical to include in the IE?]

Properties/Attributes

Method

Pump and recovery, step test, stress test... [Maybe a link to published document is the easiest solution here. Otherwise we need to describe observation piezos, their relation to the pumped bore, draw-down curves etc etc.]

Yield (fr: Productivité)

Aquifer storativity

Aquifer transmitivity (fr: transmissivité)

Well efficiency (fr: Performance du puits)

Concept/Feature: Water analysis

Definition

All the water analysis done on water sampled at a well : hardness, General Chemistry, Chloride measurements, Recovery, Bacterial Analysis, Mineral Analysis...

Properties/Attributes

Water observation

Concept/Feature: Administrative overlay

Definition

Any administrative area or overlay that impacts, or is impacted by, the operation of this well. For example, a groundwater management area, or a monitoring program.

Properties/Attributes

Name of overlay

Description

Date(s)

When was/is/will the overlay be in effect.

Authority

Who has the authority for this overlay, e.g. Dept of Water

Concept/Feature: License or permit

Definition

Any licence or permnit that is attached to this borehole/well. e.g. a permit to drill and construct a bore, or a license to extract groundwater

Properties/Attributes

Permit ID

Description

What is this permit for

Date(s)

When was/is/will the permit be in effect.

Authority

Who issued this permit

Permit purpose

Mine dewatering, irrigation, salt water interception ...
