Rich text does not save when editing the field in an Experience Editor edit frame modal

Situation: an edit frame is added to a page. The edit frame opens up a window in which an express item field can be edited. If the express item contains fields that open up additional windows such as rich tex, links, and images, the changed values will not save and the work will be lost.

I am happy to work on fixing this -- though any tips on where I can get started would be appreciated!
