If synths run in their own thread, then hosts can create multple instances and run them in parallel.
Hosts can then create banks of single-channel synths, using one per channel, and do the channel handling themselves...
Maybe this is not so important for multi-channel synthesizers, but it might be a good idea for them to run in separate threads anyway.
