From the original issue at nextcloud/server#12382, the viewer should be used for all kinds of different apps:

  • Mail: attachments, or clicking on inline images
  • Contacts: profile pictures
  • Social: any posted pictures
  • Talk: files posted in chat
  • Deck: attachments of a task
  • Files shared via link

This should probably go into the modal component. Viewer is made to work with files only as it is. But the overall design and opening of images needs to be done with the modal directly :)
