Direct handling of hdf5 in js (especially in the browser) has been tried at the time of development but was not possible. It might be possible now: https://github.com/usnistgov/jsfive
This would make the server component obsolete and would therefore be a huge enhancement.

It definitely looks like this issue can be resolved using: https://github.com/usnistgov/h5wasm as mentioned in HDF-NI/hdf5.node#29
