Why you choose to use a devMode function over __DEV__ variable like in mobx

I'm curious to know, did there a reason you choose to use the function devMode rather than a variable __DEV__ as you did in the mobx packages.

I think (maybe I'm wrong, probably...) using the __DEV__ variable is better for dead code elimination than a function that needed to be evaluated.
