In most editors, the INSERT key will toggle insert/overwrite.
You may think nobody actually uses that, but it's a standard feature in practically every text-editor since the dawn of time, and it does have it's uses.
Typically the cursor changes from a vertical line to a block when overwrite is toggled on.
