There is a HOWTO on installing WSL (1/2) in the WSL documentation. However there is no mention of how to clean uninstall/disable of WSL. What is the official way to do this in addition to saving the GNU/Linux distribution images for future use?
Details
On account of enabling WSL2, I am facing a date/time initialization issue that sets up the year to 3209 and date to August 9 after every reboot and/or windows update since version 21327.
Feedback (1 2 3 from the Feedback Hub) from users facing similar issue suggest this has probably got to do with enabling "Windows Virtual Platform" optional feature for WSL 2.
I intend to uninstall/disable WSL2 and its associated requirements like optional features to resolve this issue. Before this I need to save my Ubuntu 18.04 image for a future use.
Steps
I intend to carry out the following steps.
Export the distribution instance (
Ubuntu-18.04
in my case) to a backup fileubuntu_backtup
.Terminate the distribution instance in case it is running already.
Wait for typically 8 seconds at affect termination. Then
Unregister the distribution instance.
Repeat the steps above for other WSL distros.
Disable the optional features (Settings > Apps > Apps and Features > Optional Features > More Windows Features)
Reboot the host.
Feedback needed
Please clarify if this approach is correct as there is no documentation related to uninstalling WSL 2.
