The behavior of "debug" appears to simply enable thrown errors. This turns out to be the behavior I was missing, and I didn't discover it because the naming made me think it should only be enabled in development.
I studied the documentation when learning graphql-shield but missed this one. If the option were named according to what it does, it would have saved me (and our users) a lot of time.
