I think a typical use case for MC is someone reads a paper and wants to learn more about the data that went into a specific figure/table. When they look at a published dataset, there should be some clear way for them to determine which experiments/samples/processes are associated with that figure/table.
I'm not sure that this requires new features, it might just be that we need to use some sort of convention.
