I am writing to discuss a matter regarding the internationalization of the Mastodon brand, particularly the translation of its name into different languages. This topic has arisen due to concerns about accessibility and inclusivity, aiming to ensure that Mastodon remains welcoming and understandable to users worldwide, regardless of their primary language (not every one can read English letters).

From my understanding, the Mastodon name and logos are protected trademarks of Mastodon gGmbH, as outlined in your Trademark Policy. This protection is crucial for preserving the integrity and goodwill associated with the Mastodon brand. However, I would like to explore the possibility of allowing translations of the Mastodon name into other languages, similar to practices observed with other global brands like WhatsApp, Telegram and Google (translating the letters, not the meaning), as well as the approach taken by Wikipedia for certain languages.

Additionally, it's noteworthy that Mastodon's community commitment to internationalization extends to its official applications, where the Mastodon name is indeed translated for some few languages. But this decision came from the translators, and I did not find texts clarifying the validity of this from a legal standpoint

The goal behind this proposal is twofold:

  1. To enhance the accessibility of Mastodon for non-English speaking users, thereby promoting broader adoption and engagement with the platform.
  2. To align with the spirit of openness and inclusivity that Mastodon embodies, ensuring that the platform is accessible to as many individuals as possible, regardless of their linguistic background.

I understand that any use of the Mastodon trademarks beyond "fair" or "nominative" use requires approval and adherence to specific guidelines. Therefore, I kindly request guidance on whether it is permissible to translate the Mastodon name into other languages, and if so, what steps should be taken to ensure compliance with your Trademark Policy.

Thank you for considering this request. I believe that fostering a more inclusive and globally accessible Mastodon community could significantly contribute to the platform's growth and success.

As a non-English speaker, I confirm that many people using social medias such as Mastodon, Can not read English letters, so they are looking to them like an average American looking at a Japanese Kanji!

I couldn't find any phrase where they prohibit translating (actually transliterating) Mastodon into local languages. That is a common practice everywhere. So if there is no prohibition, there is no need to explicitly allow doing it. Please let me know if I am missing something important.
