Is there a shortcut to the /msg NickServ identify command, or is this something that we should do as a raw message?

...that's just a privmsg that you have to send.

You send it as a PRIVMSG, which is actually a good thing. Some servers use alternate names for NickServ or don't run services at all. Services are not a part of the IRC RFC as far as I'm aware, so they don't really belong in the library anyway.
