I'm aware that this might add a bit of overhead and cost. Not sure which facility would be suitable for this. Google Analytics with custom events maybe? I'm also OK setting something up and paying for it. Should help us understand how footnotes is being used.
Discussion topic is opt-in / opt-out and of course showing what the content of the stats is to the user who cares.
