Or should we add a feature to automatically approve a longer-term request for short-term while the discussion's ongoing, or does that reduce the immediacy?

None of the above?
I was of the opinion that short term requests were intended to cover: a. quick jobs and b. last-minute issues like glue hasn't dried etc.. and that long term requests had some lead time allowing the community time to consider it and to encourage planning ahead on the part of the member.
Either of the above will allow the project to start regardless of any consideration and it seems unfair to let a large project start only to be voted out shorty after, and defeats the object of the system if this never happens...
I was thinking of people having to leave things at short notice. Maybe it would be better to say "you're asking to store something from today - this isn't possible unless it's a short-term request etc"?
