Fixed by commit(s) d65e5f6 6c99e63 0ef7836 4e46ff4

Extended Description

It would be great if we could pick d65e5f6 (adds tests) and 6c99e63 (fix) onto the 12.0.1 branch.

It fixes a mis-compile as illustrated in the changed test, which users can hit with relatively simple C code.

The fix does not apply cleanly, could someone backport this and push a branch to their local github fork?

It looks like the fixes have been applied to 12.x as

Please let me know if there's anything else left to do.
