Maybe periodically poll a new Up Service and let the clients know if there's no connection to the service so clients can react to the offline event.

How should e.g. the extension react here? Display notification?

I think a notification at least. I think we should have a proper offline mode. So to not let user do stuff will for sure result in an error.
