Currently, text buffers are designed with the assumption that only terminal-based fixed-length strings will be displayed.

In order to be able to render markdown and display graphical text in the buffer in the future, I would like the following three features

I am really looking forward to this since my default font in Emacs is a variable pitch font and I only revert to a monospaced font in buffers where absolutely needed for alignment or other reasons. Inserting images would be really cool for many use-cases in combination with SDL2 (and the other GUI backends) - I envision it also being more flexible than the image handling in Emacs :)
