@iwilltry42 did you have any opinions on how this should be improved? I was running into #1072 in our Github Action CI when using the default tools-node import, and so I switched to importing with -m direct, but now I am experiencing #1020.

I'm happy to work on this enhancement as k3d has been an extremely useful tool for our development pipeline, and it'd be nice to get rid of the intermittent errors in our build.
