I talked with @tgeorgeux this afternoon a bit more about the UI/UX workflow and process that would be best to use in this repo. Here are some of our thoughts (open to feedback):

  • Let's use Figma for mockups and visual design work. If the new designers can create a Figma account, I can add you to the team. We already have design assets for this repo and some existing visual design review you will be able to see.
  • Overall, let's use GitHub issues and PRs to initiate design related review and discussions. If it looks like video chats are needed, we can do that as well, but let's make sure there we at least start on GitHub.
  • For doing design review of mockups and pre-implementation design work, we are thinking of the following:
    • Open a GitHub issue describing the design (why?, what?, how?, research, design process, etc.)
    • Post any exported screenshots from Figma directly into the issue.
    • Include a shared link to the Figma file to allow folks to also to design review on Figma as well.
  • For pull requests that make UI/UX design changes:
    • Post before and after screenshots along with a description of the change.
    • Link to any related GitHub issues or Figma files.
  • @tgeorgeux will be available to help with design reviews, and I can be pulled in on difficult design questions or decisions. But especially on design, we are hoping the AWS team can take a lead on it (we want to help, but don't block on us).
  • Something we have found in working with designers in the past - it can take some time to get used to doing design - even the rough early stages - in a very open and public context. We can talk more about this as questions come up, but at this point I will say this: doing design on an open-source project can be a very rewarding adventure that provides lots of learning opportunities and close proximity to users. We are excited to have more folks helping with design!
