Problem

A PR to upgrade MathJax in JupyterLab 4 to MathJax 3 is opened: jupyterlab/jupyterlab#13877

If merge as is, the mathjax_config will not be used any longer. And therefore this extension will not have any effect.

Is it a good or a bad thing?

I'm a bit lost here; is this extension a dependency of JupyterLab or Jupyter Server? I can't find any reference to this package when searching for occurrences of jupyter_server_mathjax in either GitHub org.

If this is a dependency, it seems clear that this package should be maintained for as long as JL3 is maintained. No further action would be needed.

Otherwise, I believe we should ask ourselves whether we can just archive this repository and deprecate the package.
