See jenkins-infra/jenkins.io#2899 (comment) where the Changelog generator added @timja to the list of authors due to the merge commit. Merge commits are a part of the maintainer work (which needs recognition). They are much appreciated, but they do not exactly represent the functional change.

I suggest ignoring merge commits when generating a list of contributors
