Project Proposal

Please fill in the details below to confirm you adhere to the Jazzband Guidelines, and also add the package name to the issue title.

Project Details

textract

Project Description

Textract is a small utility which extracts text from various document formats. It has > 100k downloads / month and is well tested and documented, just needs some love in form of dependency updates.

The maintainer @deanmalmgren seems to like the idea:

Project Leads

No idea, I'm new to the jazzband orga.

@tfeldmann I can confirm those last two check boxes.

I just merged a PR in to textract this morning to update the CONTRIBUTING guidelines and add the JazzBand badge to the docs. What's next to fully migrate this over to the jazzband org?

As a user of textract, I'd like to bring to everyone's attention a recent issue. Until recently, only a deprecation warning was shown when using textract, but since the release of pip 24.1, there have been compatibility issues that have impacted CI/CD processes. Textract is now incompatible with the latest pip version, requiring adjustments in CI/CD pipelines to ensure the pip installed is older than 24.1.

Could this compatibility issue be prioritized in the migration process to ensure a seamless transition for all users relying on the latest pip version?

Ping @jazzband/roadies for visibility and assistance.

As textract's creator, I would be so grateful to have it fall under jazzband's care. My work has dramatically shifted away from text analysis and I've been trying to find a new maintainer for years. If there's anything else I can offer to bring this under your care, please let me know
