why period value must be a power of 2?

From jack manual:
-p, --period int
Specify the number of frames between JACK
process() calls. This value must be a power of 2, and the default is 1024.
So my question is why period must be a power of 2?

afaik this is not true
maybe it used to be that way in the past.

Probably force bu the audio driver on some system (Linux, and Window) and could be relaxed on OS X… Stéphane
