When all troops cannot be transferred to the other hero's army:
Select a troop in the starting army, then press the yellow arrow.
The selected troop will be kept in priority in the starting army.

When all troops can be transferred to the other hero's army:
Select a troop in the starting army, then press the yellow arrow.
Only one creature from the selected troop will be kept in the starting army.
