It is needed if user wants to take circuit parameters from environment variables for example.
Probably the easiest way would be to make them positional arguments without names:
$ circom merkleTree.circom -o merkleTree.json -- $DEPTH $ROUNDS
Or maybe explicitly write constructor as a string:
$ circom merkleTree.circom -o merkleTree.json --main="MerkleTree($DEPTH, $ROUNDS)"
