Extra chat functionality

1. Should there be indicators for messages that have been read by yourself? This would allow to show a counter for unread messages, for example.

Personally, I think that could be added to the game when the chat functionality is expanded to provide pagination and loading of portions of messages as well.

Personally, I would say no. Use a real chatting app instead if you want such features.

3. Should there be MarkDown support for very simple formatting (only bold and italic for now)?

Maybe. That only depends on the client's functionality and is no concern for the server, which just stores and delivers messages.
