Fixed this locally by doing the following (after completion of the create-site.sh script)

1. download Brian Rosner's django-groups:
   http://github.com/brosner/django-groups

2. unpacked it and placed the groups directory in the website/apps directory that was created by the create-site.sh script

3. create the database:
   ./bin/django syncdb

Cool, this worked for me as well... I found that I also have to perform your process for keyedcache and livesettings.
