Problem: The HEART program, which helps homeless people resolve some infractions with community hours rather than paying fees, didn't have an efficient way for tracking the progress and status of their participants. That bottleneck caused a waitlist of over 500 interested individuals wanting to participate in their program.
Solution: Hack for LA created a prototype for the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office. This proposal resulted in an improved workflow management system that significantly reduced wait times and improved outcomes for the community served (individuals experiencing homelessness).
Impact: LA City’s Information Technology Agency built a new integrated tool enablingHEART to go through the 500 person waiting list in less than 3 months. In its 1st quarter, it filed motions to resolve 1,301 cases compared to 1,793 in the whole previous year - a 290% increase in a quarter.
