Overview

We need to create a User Research Plan so that we can coordinate our many research teams across all the citizen engagement portfolio projects to identify common as well as project/initiative specific impacts

Action Items

  • Review the pilot that was created and conducted by Phoebe and the results from interview
  • Identify all the major components of the plan (e.g. Background, Objectives, Participants, Methodology, Interview Guide, Timeline, Documentation Links)
  • Draft components of the plan
  • Get feedback from internal team
  • Get feedback from external teams and Ali. Bonnie
    • Hack for LA Website (example see slide) Figma of Citizen Engagement page that could use additional content (quotes, etc.) Website team interview notes & Deck of results of interviews with current volunteers
    • Hack for LA the org (medium article & case study example)
      • The website team needs a short but impressive impact description for the website (see the slide above), and the org wants a medium article (quotes, timeline, effect at the stakeholder, lasting change that the new processes we introduced might have made, direct value received from specific process or product)
    • Civic Opportunity - Alex Lee
      • What does this team need in order to quantify the value of a specific initiative to determine if we achieved objectives. "interested in data for efficacy of projects"
    • Revenue (Fundraising/Earned Revenue) Chelsey Beck and Melissa Mae Cruz
      • What does this team need in order to raising money for any project that we are doing impact interviews with
      • Fundraising interview notes
    • Marketing - Mike Chiuasno
  • Consolidate research results Miro card sorting, Google Sheets response sorting, Google docs consolidated findings
  • Review the research docs from other projects
  • Talk to someone from SEIE Survey team - Henry Kaplan
  • Update the research plan

@Chianta please put a link to the interview with Julien into this issue and send a link to this issue to Kristine Eudey on slack. The hackforla.org website UX research team needs to be able to pull a quote from it for the website.

Met with Basudhara "Basu" Sen from Hack for LA website team. Their team previously (before her time) conducted surveys with volunteers who were just being onboarded. Now they are planning to survey other people who are not necessarily current volunteers or donors. They are currently working on recruitment and expect to conduct interviews in about a month if the timeline does not change. They are happy to keep in touch with us as they collect data. They would also love to see our research plans, surveys, KPIs, etc.

Placed interview notes and recording of Zoom call in https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1lcFhiGPrY7E03U_t7dDSapWs7oKcHsz7

Update to include some questions about SEIE survey. We want to be able to interview people once to cover multiple projects. Separate out more generic questions. Perhaps cut down in some places to allow to cover everything. Structure interview plan so the interviewer can focus on the projects in which the interviewee was most involved.

Made the simpler edits, like making sentences clearer. Reviewed SEIE dashboard from EmpowerLA site. Still thinking about how to restructure the research plan to be more general. I have about 3 hours to work on this this week. Not sure how long it will take since I'm still working out what needs to be done.

Made a new copy of the research plan, simplified it a lot, and made questions more general.

Questions:

  • Would the EmpowerLA staff members we interview for SEIE survey be different from the ones we interview for the website redesign project? I'm assuming yes, but want to confirm.
  • Does this question seem generic, or specific to the website survey? "Did the survey provide insights to your organization that it did not previously have? If so, what were the insights? If not, why not?"
  • What are the questions specific to the SEIE survey?

For the purposes of discussing how many people to interview:

  • EmpowerLA
(3-6 people including the Director of Innovation, the General Manager, and 2 staff members - or 4 staff members if different people worked on SEIE)
  • Neighborhood Councils
    (3-4 people)
  • Hack for LA volunteers
    (3-4 people or more).
  • Super by Design (company that conducted website redesign workshops)
    (1-2 people)

We discussed that we want people from this team to conduct the interviews with EmpowerLA and Super by Design, but others from within Hack for LA can be trained to conduct the interviews with Neighborhood Council members and Hack for LA volunteers. We will need to create a slide deck for training them. @kalyaniraman to create a task for creating this slide deck.

Bonnie added this note in the access the data channel: "Bonnie 12:08 PM
@Sarah Nabelsi for context @SnowT is on the open #community-survey survey team. She will be reaching out to you to find out what you want to know when she conducts User Reasearch on what the impact of Hack for LAs work on our stakeholders is. Specifically SEIE survey work impact. She has already coordinated with all other teams at HfLA that have stakeholders to find out what questions they want included. Please meet with her, so we can get you and hfla some awesome quotes for the work your team has accomplished."

Met with Henry Kaplan about SEIE survey needs. A lot is covered by the current questions we have. Still thinking whether we need to add anything. Also, his advice based on the SEIE survey work is to keep the questions and answers fairly streamlined to make it easier to analyze the results.

I updated the research plan to make the questions general enough to also apply to SEIE. I'm wondering if it could be further streamlined. I do know we need the questions need to be specific enough that we are getting specific responses.

Also, I hear there are possible changes at the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment that may affect this research plan.

Got questions answered in meeting. Just looking at streamlining 2 similar questions, if possible. Review again next meeting.

Also want to know if I need to use a different visual style template for this.

After the final edits are approved, we should be able to close out this issue and open new ones for conducting the interviews.

LAStorm commented Apr 18, 2022

Addressed all the notes. I think we're ready for final review.

My only remaining questions are:

  • Should I put this in a different visual style template?
  • Do we have a time limit for the interviews?

I have a doctor appointment next week, and the following week is the project management meeting, so after this week it will be another 2 weeks before I can address this issue in the team meetings.

I think this task is done!

Follow ups:

  • @LAStorm to create a new issue for planning & conducting outreach to interviewees. Create a spreadsheet of categories of people to interview, with names and contact information that we have so far.
  • @mkleibman to create a new issue for making a deck for training people to conduct the interviews.
