Sample email from UCLA student: ---------- Forwarded message --------- Hello Bonnie, Best, |
Another sample internship req letter: ---------- Forwarded message --------- Hello Ms. Wolfe, I'm Vincent: a 4th-year cognitive science student at University of California, Los Angeles. I found your listing through the Fieldwork in Cognitive Science page on the UCLA Psychology website. I wanted to express my interest in interning at Hack for LA for the Spring 2022 quarter. I'm required to complete 1 more quarter of internships for graduation and would be doing this internship for course credit via Psych 195B: Fieldwork in Cognitive Science. I have had minimal exposure to Web Development, UX/UI, and Video Production through small internships but am eager to learn. I'm happy to accept an unpaid internship, I just want experience. Additionally, I have taken courses in conducting research and statistical modeling using R. I have attached my resume below. Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to hearing from you! Cheers, |

Found these two emails on their site as possible contacts: Email sent: Hi Fieldwork Dept., I hope this email finds you well. My name is Grace Amaogu. I am reaching out to you on behalf of HackforLA's Internship Program. We partner with schools in LA as sponsors for summer internship programs. The internship proves to be an excellent learning experience for all our interns and 100% of them said that they would recommend our program to their peers. We were once mentioned on your website, for fieldwork internship positions and have received applications from UCLA students who are seeking internship placements. We would like to know:
I look forward to hearing from you soon. Regards, |
This is the link where Bonnie's information is being picked by UCLA students. "Below are the questions we would like answers to. Also can we get Bonnie's personal phone number and email address removed and instead get [email protected] added to contact info in this link? It would be wonderful if we could quickly get on to a zoom meeting and discuss this or we can have correspondence through email as per your convenience." |

Hi Fieldwork Dept., Thank you for your response. It looks like we are currently listed on the Psych195B for fieldwork internship positions, and have received applications from UCLA students who are seeking internship placements. We have changes we would like to make. Should we resubmit the form, or is detailing them here sufficient? Replace

Also, can we replace the part in bold here

Additionally, we are in the process of restructuring how we take in new intern applications and would like to find out the following information in order to improve the student experience. You have given us the summer internship start date, is there an end date? Can you provide us with the schedule for the school year internship as well? What are UCLA's requirements for unpaid experiential work to be an internship? Please provide details (supervisory hours, reporting to UCLA - frequency and method, etc.) Does UCLA have a service requirement/volunteer requirement that you are aware of, or who should we talk to find out what UCLA's service requirements are? If UCLA has a service requirement, how does a UCLA internship differ from a service requirement? It would be wonderful if we could quickly get on to a Zoom meeting and discuss this, or we can have correspondence through email as per your convenience. Regards, Grace Amaogu |
Email to the UCLA psych dept. has been sent. Once we get a response issue will be updated and closed. |
Dropped a follow up email since I did not receive any response yet. Hi, Your response will help us plan on the internship in alignment with your schedule. We could also do a zoom call to get this going. Please let us know. |
Got the following reply from UCLA (Sender : Dylan Sarnowski) Hope all is well. My apologies for the delay in responding to your inquiry – the first two weeks of the quarter are always incredibly busy for our office. I have updated your Psych 195B listing with your desired changes. Please see my answers to your questions below:

Follow-up email sent. Hi Dylan, Thank you for responding and making the changes on the Psych 195B listing. We will work on putting together the necessary materials needed and fill out the Psych 195A form as well. Also, we would like to clarify the part in the third answer that says -"The supervisor will give feedback as to what is expected in order to give credit for the course, as well as conduct the one-hour weekly meeting". Can there be multiple interns in the one-hour weekly meeting or is it one-on-one with each intern? We look forward to your reply. Regards, |
Hi Grace & Bilkish, The meeting does not have to be a one-on-one with each intern separately. The weekly meeting can be with multiple interns at once. Thanks Dylan Sarnowski |
Send the following to UCLA students Thanks for your interest in the Hack for LA Internship.
We will review the applications on May 16th and send invite letters (with Calendly link) to the candidates we wish to interview. If you are not selected for an interview, you will receive notification that we are not moving forward. We will be conducting first round interviews the week of May 17-22 and will close the internship opportunity if we select an intern from the first round of applicants. We look forward to receiving your application or questions that our documentation does not yet answer. Best p.s. You asked about the difference between regular volunteers and interns.
