Context Currently, the only way to set up a desktop IDE is to set your IDE preferences in Gitpod, and then restart a workspace. As observed throughout usability, it is not obvious to many users that desktop IDE support exists in Gitpod. This epic is to facilitate different UX journeys for users when opening Desktop IDE's beyond updating preferences and restarting a workspace.
Owner Product - @loujaybee \ Tech - @akosyakov \ Design - @gtsiolis
Value Users are more likely to discover desktop IDE's, and have a more pleasant experience with Gitpod.
Acceptance Criteria - The majority of users during Gitpod onboarding are aware of the different Desktop IDE's
Growth Area Onboarding
Persona(s) Desktop IDE users
Hypothesis - Users entering Gitpod are unlikely to discover the desktop IDE preferences, perceive Gitpod as being "VS Code only" and therefore bounce and/or have an unsatisfactory experience whilst using Gitpod.
Measurement ⬆️ Increase in users completing onboarding
⬆️ Increase in activation / retention
In scope - Make IDE desktop more prominent for JetBrains Desktop and VS Code Desktop
Out of scope N/A
Complexities - Implementing a solution that does not negatively impact onboarding performance.
- Implement a solution that does not add unnecessary friction to the onboard experience.
