Information Gathering and Usage

Lantern's central servers store the following information:

  • Your e-mail address.
  • The e-mail address of the account that invited you.
  • The e-mail addresses of anyone you invite.
  • A Google Talk "refresh token" which allows Lantern to run under your account from the cloud when your computer is asleep.

Giving Access

Participating in the Lantern network in Give Access mode means that people in your Lantern network can access the Internet through your computer. Your Lantern network is made up of the people you are friends with on Lantern, and their friends, branching out through 4 levels of connections.

We use the Kaleidoscope Limited Advertisement Protocol to ensure that Lantern users only share internet connections with people they are connected with through trusted friends.

Commitment to Your Privacy and Safety

Lantern takes the responsibility of providing internet access very seriously. It is extremely important to us that we limit how much information we store and that we keep your information secret.

All Lantern software and infrastructure has been configured with strong security protections and our data retention policies are in accordance with our goal to allow everyone safe and uncensored access to the Internet. Only the core lantern developers have access to information that could identify you. Any contact they have with your data is related to making sure that Lantern is working correctly.

We will not use any information we collect for any other purpose other than providing the Lantern service to you and others. If you would like us to delete your account and its associated information, please send us an e-mail at [email protected].

Data Storage

Lantern uses third party vendors and hosting partners to provide the necessary hardware, software, networking, storage, and related technology required to run Lantern. Although Lantern owns the code, databases, and all rights to the Lantern application, you retain all rights to your data.

Responsible Disclosure

Lantern may be compelled to disclose information we have collected under special circumstances, such as to comply with subpoenas. Lantern will challenge any requests for information we believe to be unjust and will notify you of any requests for data about you whenever possible.

Usage Data

When using Lantern, you can choose to provide us with usage data.

If you enable this option we use:

  • Google Analytics with IP Anonymization to store information about your use of Lantern.
  • Exceptional.io to store information about errors in the Lantern software.
  • Google App Engine to store information about the countries you have logged-in from and the number of bytes you have sent and received.

When you install Lantern, we ask if you want to contribute this information and you can change this setting at any time in the settings menu.

Changes to this Policy

Lantern may periodically update this policy. We will notify you about significant changes in the way we treat personal information by sending a notice to the email address associated with your Lantern account or by placing a prominent notice in the Lantern software.
