I don't think it's possible to transcode it but I thought I might still ask.

Currently, .mkv is already supported. However, in contrast with other file extensions, such as .mp4, the video will only start to play after the entire file has been downloaded. I do not know if this is a limitation of the current player being used, or if it is a limitation of the .mkv file format itself.

If partially downloaded .mkv files are indeed reproducible, then it should be just a matter of replacing the current player for a better one.

I can confirm that partially downloaded .mkv files are reproducible. Could you try to switch to another player then?

Edit: I'll try and report back.

Actually, the request for more players has already been brought up in #2. I would do this myself but am currently lacking of time. If you can do this, please submit a PR and I shall gladly merge the new (better) player. 👍
