This was originally proposed and attempted in #737, but the resulting artifact didn't run correctly, so the work has been moved to this ticket.

After work in #762, where the appveyor script has been co-opted to support both windows and mac os builds, this work is more challenging. It doesn't look like peakdetector really works in the current appveyor windows build.
