The long-awaited backward-incompatible versions are released:

Details can be found in the CHANGELOG.bd file in each of the corresponding GitHub repos. rust-esp32-std-demo also updated to the latest releases. Ditto for esp-idf-template.

RUWM

• Steady progress over the last months
• Updated to latest esp-idf-* crates which were just released
• The Simulator web mode (thanks to hal-sim) works fast enough now (though more changes to hal-sim in terms of UI ergonomics are planned)

Idea: RUWM on bare-metal?

• Code is organized as a workspace of several projects
• The RUWM core project is async, no_std and no-alloc (and - in fact - even MCU-agnostic, as it runs in the browser too, with WASM)
• The web UI and simulator web UI anyway only run in the browser and are thus cross-platform already
• The one ESP IDF specific project - ruwm-esp32 is a tiny initialization code that configures ESP IDF services and peripherals and pushes them into the core

Can we use RUWM as an ongoing litmus test for our bare-metal portfolio readiness?

Stuff that RUWM core would need to run on bare-metal:

• (Done?) An executor - can be either embassy-executor or edge-executor (as ESP bare-metal has a generic allocator now) and we can make it configurable
• (Done?) Blocking or async drivers for SPI, I2C, one-shot calibrated ADC and pin peripherals (pin peripherals need interrupt support)
• (Done?) Support for WIFI in STA and AP mode, as well as async IP on top
• (Easy?) NVS storage abstraction for reading/writing small binary BLOBs. Do we have it? Pointers appreciated.
• (Easy?) OTA (with ESP IDF bootloader initially). Do we have it? Pointers appreciated.
• (Medium/Easy) Support for async HTTP client; perhaps we can work on bug-fixing the one in edge-net?
• (Medium) Support for async HTTP server with WS support; perhaps we can work on bug-fixing the one in edge-net?
• (Hard?) Support for async MQTT client V3.1. Ideas?
• (Hard?) Support for TLS. Ideas?

esp-storage is great. But it is only a building block for OTA and for NVS storage. By NVS storage I actually meant reading/writing into NVS (as in ESP-IDF style partitioning). Maybe the general question here is - how would bare metal partitions be organized? And the boot process for them? If we'll follow the ESP IDF two-stages booting, with the ESP IDF C bootloader (initially), we probably need small bare-metal utility code for loading the partition table? Once we have that, we have visibility into what OTA / factory / NVS partitions are in there, and manipulating OTA & NVS partitions becomes a much easier task.

Yeah. The TLS on bare-metal topic will likely be a total PITA. As in us in a need to match rusttls, but in no_std and (ideally) without allocations. I'm starting to ask myself how hard it would be to compile mbedtls to bare-metal, by providing the minimal libc it needs, and then use this stuff as a BLOB from Rust. You know, as you did with the wifi blob...

Yes definitely esp-storage is (and should be) just the low level flash access to build KV-storage or anything on top of it - as you said the ota-experiment is just an experiment

By reading this it looks to me that a super-minimal, allocate-only-from-a-fixed-memory-chunk, no-debug-messages mbedtls should be buildable with only these guys:
