• installer supports deployment of ESP-IDF and minified ESP-IDF - useful for containers (thnx to @N3xed for adding support for activated environment, thnx to @SergioGasquez for integrating workflows)

GitPod and DevContainer development

Sample project with SPI including Wokwi integration and support for GDB:

Example is using "target = branch" approach, because there is no way to parametrize Containerfile before launching in GitPod or Dev Container. Not the ideal from DRY perspective, but working.

esp-wifi

• basic BLE support for ESP32C3
• basic BLE support for ESP32
  • interesting observation when implementing this: Interesting behavior on ESP32 esp-wifi-sys#35
  • no idea why that is happening
  • we really need to sort out such problems
• updated some dependencies

esp-backtrace

• still in my personal GitHub space ... any objections to move it to esp-rs organization? We are using it in esp-wifi for some time and it seems to work fine

Ferrous System Training

• Fix ESP-IDF environment activation std-training#69 under review
• We made some changes to the Dockerfile so it can be used for Devcontainers and for GitHub CI.

Devcontainers

• Devcontainers are working in Gitpod, VsCode and GitHub Codespaces. We now cover the whole development cycle:
  • Building
  • Simulating in Wokwi
    • Debugging with GDB
  • Flashing
    • Monitoring
• We now support flashing from Devcontainers using esp-web-flash-server. Thanks to @bjoernQ!
• We migrated wokwi server to Rust, and we are now using wokwi-server. Thanks to @MabezDev!

IDF Devcontainers

• esp-idf-container repo which creates all the tags for the image hosted in Dockerhub
• esp-idf-devcontainer to serve as template repo with all the devcontainer features(vscode and gitpod devcontainer integration, wokwi simulation, gdb debugging with wokwi....).
• Real project with all this features: ctag-tbd (missing wokwi simulation and debugging)

Other

• Improved Wokwi builders
• rust-build improvements
  • Install xtensa-esp32-elf-gcc when esp-idf is not being installed
  • PR to improve documentation: Improve toolchain overriding documentation rust-build#75
• We now have an GH action to build projects using Dockerhubs images: actions-esp-rs-build
  • Eg: rust-esp32-std-demo
• Embuild PR (Add CI to generate packages embuild#49) to generate packages with GH Actions.
  • This is very useful in devcontainers since it saves a lot of time.
• Added Espressif content in The Little Book of Rust Books: Add embedded Espressif books lborb/book#50

FYI, esp-rs/embuild#49 is merged and I created an ldproxy release: https://github.com/esp-rs/embuild/releases/tag/ldproxy-v0.3.1. Thanks again for the CI scripts!

So, all binary crates will get releases under <create>-v<version> tags and embuild itself will be under <version> tags.

Espflash

• remove hyphen from chip string espflash#183 - Make the Chip::FromStr impl more flexible.
• Make all library modules public espflash#182

xtensa-lx-rt

• Correct the arguments to the exception macro xtensa-lx-rt#37
• Don't create __exception with xtensa_lx_rt::exception macro xtensa-lx-rt#38

Compiler

• 1.61 release now available, lots of changes in the asm! and rustc_target backend which made rebasing a bit more tricky. Hopefully nothing broke in the process :D.

Rust board

• QR code link to the training esp-rust-board#45
  • Won't make this revision, board files are already being processed in China
  • Instead of on the board, we were thinking about adding the QR code to the box, much like the newer devkits.
  • The QR code URL is likely to be esp-rs.github.io/esp-rust-board, which may then redirect directly to the ferrous training.

esp-alloc

• Extracted the esp-alloc crate from code found in esp-wifi
  • https://github.com/esp-rs/esp-alloc
  • Extract the allocator into an separate crate esp-wifi-sys#31
• Began work on re-writing esp-alloc around the linked-list-allocator crate
  • This crate is used for other embedded platforms (eg. Cortex-M)
  • Should be complete in theory, however there are some issues so still debugging

• Published new releases (1.5.0 and 1.5.1) of cargo-espflash and espflash

• serialport now enumerate callout ports (/dev/cu.*) on macOS
  • Enumerate callout devices in addition to dialin devices on macOS serialport/serialport-rs#54
  • Once I publish a new release this will be reflected in espflash

miscellaneous

• Added an option to esp-template to use VSCode Remote Containers
