Can release_version be overwritten from command line

I have an application, I would like to step up the release_version of that application when a new commit is pushed.
I tried to variablelise the release_version but it is not reading the variable from shell environment.

rebar.config:-
{relx, [{release, {my_release, ${APP_VERSION}},
         [myapp]},

export APP_VERSION="REV1"

It returns a syntax error.

rebar3 release -v "${APP_VERSION}"

You may want to use rebar.config.script to create a more dynamic configuration value: http://rebar3.org/docs/configuration/config_script/

This would let you dynamically set the value.

I have tried to move to dynamic configuration. But I couldn't find support for profiles in rebar3.config.script .

{profiles, [{prod, [{relx,
                      {mode, prod},
		      {dev_mode, false},
		      {debug_info, strip}
                     ]
		    }]}]}.

===> No entry for profile prod in config.
===> No releases have been specified in the system!

I get above errors/warnings.

rebar.config.script literally gets the original unevaluated config value in the CONFIG variable, and returns another term that represents the config that was arbitrarily transformed. You would have to yourself program in code to do variable substitutions.
