Another idea that occurred to me is to underline the filename of folders when hovered, as in a browser or in the terminal for hyperlinks. If the browser analogy is pushed even further then only the text should be the hyperlink and the icon should be selectable. |

Some users who have used double-click to open interfaces for file managers for a long time find it hard to adapt to the new mixed-mode click handling. This discussion is for suggestions for ways in which the mixed-mode UX can be made easier to adapt to by changing the UX to more obviously reflect the different behaviours of folders and files to clicking. By changing the appearance of things, users may be less likely to use them in habitual ways.
Some small changes that could be considered are:
More radical changes could be considered for the IconView if a virtualized widget based grid were to be used but that would be a longer term project.
Please do not suggest re-adding a double-click mode option or scrapping mixed-mode in this discussion, that is already being addressed in other discussions.
