Getting started
As part of the broader getting started initiative, there are few tasks the Kibana Platform team will need to prioritize as part of this effort. I’ve outlined some of the top priorities
Notification center
Github link coming soon
The notification center will support a number of initiatives at Elastic. From background search, to case assignment and more. It also plays a key role in our onboarding flows we’d like to build, enabling continuous onboarding for new and existing users.
Suggestion service
New meta issue coming
One way to continually onboard users, is providing suggestions along the way. This could include suggested integrations, products / features, documentation, training, blogs / webinars, etc. This service will aim to provide suggestions to be surfaced in the notification center, integration pages and more.
User entity and personalization
#17888
We’ve wanted the concept of a user in Kibana for quite some time. Onboarding is really a personal experience. After the initial step of ingestion, we need to be able to provide personalized steps for getting to know our stack and solutions. While there are many reasons why we need a Kibana user, for onboarding specifically we will surface user-specific onboarding steps, suggestions and calls to action.
Navigational search
Navigational search will change the way end users interact with Kibana. It was a key part of our getting started initiative and in order to improve that experience, we need to continue to iterate on search making it that much easier for folks to get where they need to go.
Product tours
New meta issue coming
Dashboard, Discover
As part of onboarding, we plan to provide contextual product tours for each solution and product. This will help end users get the most value out of their data. Similar to tags, I'd imagine we come up with the initial implementation to support a few apps and provide guidance for others.
Tentative projects
There are a few projects that may be prioritized in the near future but are currently still in the research phase. I’m adding to this meta issue to keep on our radar.
Enhanced sidebar navigation
Our new navigation is a huge improvement to Kibana and makes it easy to consume all of the applications available to an end user. Unfortunately, there is a problem with staying in context. If I’m using the Observability solution, I should be able to jump in between applications without having to open up the hamburger menu or visually parsing through the docked navigation. Leveraging concepts like a Kibana user and persisted settings, we can also start leaning into personalization in navigation. We are currently iterating through some ideas and gathering feedback, but this project has the potential to surface as a priority soon.
Homepage adjustments
With our getting started initiative, focus on ingesting data and the need to continuously onboard - there might be some adjustments to the homepage in the foreseeable future. Nothing has been defined, but this feels like an eventual outcome of this initiative.
