The metric panel only allows you to compute on true 'numeric' fields.

Since @timestamp is really a number, please allow it to be used in metric panels.

My use case is "show the timestamp of the most recent document". I would use this on a dashboard showing the health of the ELK cluster itself.

This is slightly related to #678, but doesn't need a new panel type.

+1 I'd like min too, and on any date field. My use case - get a dashboard, filter by some kind of event, then I'd like to know the first and last time that event happened, without squinting/zooming into the time histogram.
