Field formatters are used independently from index pattern fields.

We should look into re-branding them and promoting them separately from index pattern fields.

This would include:

  • Rename
  • Polishing API
  • Example plugins
  • Docs

We are closing this issue in order to provide better transparency of priorities. This issue won't be prioritized in the near future. We track it in #163011 for long term planning.
