Related: #10399, #10472

There are still a substantial number of machines running older Linux distributions with glibc < 2.28 (See microsoft/vscode#203375), and these machines cannot install Python wheels with manylinux_2_28 tag. Since publishing manylinux2014 wheels is not too much work, we will continue publish manylinux2014 for one more year. This should provide the needed time for users to migrate to newer Linux distributions.

We will stop publishing manylinux2014 wheels after May 31, 2025.

TODOs

  • Set up a CI pipeline to publish manylinux2014 wheels. The wheel should be patched to display a prominent warning to prompt users to upgrade to newer Linux distributions.
  • Update the release note to alert users about the glibc requirement.
  • Publish manyxlinux2014 wheel for 2.1.0 release.
