You will need:

  • OutRun Revision B Roms
  • CannonBall - To play the tracks
  • LayOut - To edit the tracks

Firstly, ensure CannonBall runs correctly as described in the CannonBall manual.

Uncompress LayOut to a directory and run it. When LayOut first runs you will need to specify the location for both CannonBall and the uncompressed roms. The roms are needed for LayOut's preview window and to import data from the original game. You won't get far without them.

You can use the same rom directory as CannonBall. If the roms work fine in CannonBall you can guarantee they will work with LayOut too.

To check everything is setup and working, let's try importing a level from the original game into the editor.
From the menu choose File-> Import-> OutRun Level.

For now try importing Coconut Beach. Other levels may look strange if you import them, but we'll resolve that problem later.

Main Window

In the screenshot above, I've imported Coconut Beach, the first stage of the game. In the next section we'll look at the basics of the user interface.
