The leftmost suggestion field is always filled with the user input (in quotes, to make it different from regular suggestions). When speakers are not too savvy writers (as is often the case for minority language speakers), they do not know whether their text is fine, or they should look at one of the suggestions to the right.

Exactly what would be best I don't know, but one possibility is to have a dynamic background colour of that field: green for correct, red for misspelled. Possibly a third colour for "correct according to the user dictionary".

Whatever the solution, we need to provide some sort of feedback. Cf also the discussion at giellalt/lang-sma#1 (in Norwegian).

Android's behaviour is: just not show the typed text if it's correct, or highlight it in bold, depending on context. That might be one idea.

This is what I suggest:

  • highlight in bold
  • highlight background colour in light gray, the same as used by Apple for autocorrection suggestions
