Hi everyone. First and foremost, thank you all for your messages around Gateway Intents. We appreciate the honest conversation with you all, and your voicing your thoughts over in #1307. We read every message!

It’s been a little since we’ve communicated about the launch of Intents. Per everyone’s feedback, we wanted to make sure that our process and policy were entirely buttoned up to meet your guys’ needs and the needs of our users. We’re continuing those discussions, and need some more time to think and create the best system possible.

However, we know how excited you all are for Gateway Intents! And we know how much of a boon they’ll be for those of you maintaining large bots. So, we’re launching them next week, and are temporarily disabling the 100 guild limit and whitelist restriction on “Privileged Intents”. Here’s what the process will be:

  • We will ship the Developer Portal UI that allows you to check the boxes for GUILD_PRESENCES and GUILD_MEMBERS intents
  • You will still need to check the toggle to specify these intents, but
  • This toggle will temporarily not have the 100 guild restriction tied to it, nor will it require a whitelist process

We still believe that these intents are privileged and are inherently more sensitive data. In the future, we will still be considering access and restrictions around this data. However, when we do so, we want to make sure that it’s the right way to do it.

As Intents will be “officially” released, any changes regarding access to them will be accompanied by a migration and deprecation period. So, please do not fear that by using these, your bot is all of a sudden going to break without warning a few weeks from now. We will not do that.

Thank you all very much for your patience, and enjoy the feature!
