The navbar shows a hierarchy of categories of pictures, but when you click on one of them, there's no indication for the user unless you re-open the navbar. Example: when you click "Exotic", it would be nice to be able to expand in the Toolbar to see "Black Hole", "Dark Matter", etc.

Interesting, do you mean showing a breadcrumb-like title in the toolbar with a dropdown menu? I feel like that might just be giving the user too many options for navigation.
Also do you think instead making the title like "Solar System/ Mars" would be better?
To me it seems weird (not necessarily wrong, just that I've never seen it before), where the user can enter into the Exotic category, but then there's no way to filter down to "Black Hole" directly from there. I'm not sure what the best way to implement it would be though? Breadcrumb, drop-down, filter,... I don't know.
