This line fails because self.face return nothing if two characters are in
exactly the same place.
Pig merchant seems to get things wrong when he runs out of pigs.

If client specifies pure vertical movement for its own avatar, the resulting
direction vector is zero once the vertical component has been negated,
meaning that the code that handles it can abort().
Persistence and other words with the same root are incorrectly spelt
Persistance throughout.
If a character sets its velocity to 0 when its position is outside its
parents bbox, then the collision code does not detect that it is outside.
Plant C++ base class is totally screwed.
