We have made great progress since the launch of the Crypto.org Chain Mainnet on the 25th of March, 2021. In just over two months, the block height has now reached over 1 million, and there have been more than 3.5B delegated CRO as well as 1.62M transactions broadcasted to the network. A round of applause for our astonishing community and long-term supporters!
In this dev update, we would like to share several major exciting updates about the Chain. Without any further delay, let’s dive into the details!
Phase I Canis Major Upgrade on Crypto.org Chain
To align with our schedule announced in Crypto.org Chain Intergalactic Roadmap, we have launched Phase I Canis Major and conducted our first major mainnet upgrade on June 1st!
This is a milestone of the Crypto.org Chain - this upgrade allows the chain to be equipped with the NFT module. NFT represents uniquely identifiable tokens with common use cases such as art, gaming, and asset ownership. Along with the implementation of this upgrade, minting, trading, and transfer of NFT (non-fungible) tokens are now available on the native Crypto.org Chain. Check out our first minted NFT here.
Other highlighted changes of the upgrade include Arm64 architecture support (Linux and macOS) and adjusted default timeout_commit used in the consensus process. The new binary and complete changelog can be found here.
IBC Enabled on Crypto.org Chain
Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) governance proposal for cross-chain implementations has passed at the beginning of May 2021, and IBC protocol has been enabled in the mainchain! With IBC, we look forward to unlocking more potentials by cross-chain activities, bridging our chain with Ethereum protocols, as well as bringing more promising projects to the Crypto.org Chain ecosystem.
Release of Crypto.org Chain Desktop Wallet v0.2.2
Corresponding to the upgrading changes, we have recently released the newer version of Crypto.org Chain Desktop Wallet v0.2.2. Since the mainnet launch, the desktop wallet has supported staking operations, validator selections, governance voting, and other key functions to interact with the mainnet. In this new release, we have made more add-on features, and the following are the main changes:
Keplr Wallet Integration
Crypto.org Chain is natively integrated into the Keplr wallet with IBC support for cross-chain transfers now! With the user-friendly interface of Keplr wallet, you can easily stake, deposit, withdraw, as well as transfer CRO to other IBC-enabled chains within a few clicks. For the convenience of our users, we have released tutorials on how to stake your CRO on the chain and perform IBC cross-chain transactions via the Keplr wallet here.
Following this, as the mainnet has been upgraded with native NFT support, the next plan is to integrate CRO NFTs on Keplr.
Updates on Croeseid Testnet
The latest testnet “testnet-croeseid-3” has been launched with NFTs for testing (released binary is available here). This release version upgrades to the latest version of Tendermint v0.34.10. It covers the issues addressed in the scope of ADR-003 for the Croeseid testnet, contains old data from our previous “testnet-croeseid-2”, and fixes an upgrade bug.
Similar to the chain-maind release, to support Canis Major upgrade, these changes are added to this new release:
Crypto.org Croeseid3 Testnet Explorer is available here for users to track the testnet chain activities.
The previous testnet-croeseid-2 will sunset in the coming 1 - 2 weeks and we recommend users back up their data at their earliest convenience.
Ecosystem Grants Program
To boost community engagement and accelerate ecosystem expansion through more flexible methods, we have opened several initiatives funded by the Crypto.org Chain Ecosystem Grants Program.
In this new program, the foundation will give additional support to applications in our ecosystem to stimulate community participation and put more resources into the ecosystem’s prosperity.
The Ecosystem Grants Program is divided into four categories: Simple Code Bounty Program; Bug Bounty Program; Awesome Projects Rewards Program; Ecosystem Grants Program. Interested parties can apply for the type of grants program that best fits their plans.
For more information such as application process and evaluation criteria, please visit the Ecosystem Grant Programme page and proposal submission instruction.
Sustainable Commitment
In response to the growing environmental concerns, Crypto.com has stepped out to become carbon negative within 18 months and commit to offsetting more carbon than is generated by all activities across the organization through a three-phase approach. Based on the nature of the chain, the Crypto.org Chain is built on the Proof of Stake (PoS) model, which is much more energy-efficient than Proof of Work (PoW) blockchains. The upcoming plan includes emission-free NFT Minting, and support for the migration of Ethereum (PoW) based protocols via the Crypto.org Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) Chain.
As part of our community, our users can rest assured that we're building a more sustainable future together. More details are available here if you would like to read more.
Newsletter Subscription
We send the newsletter about our newest chain updates regularly, if you are interested, please click the following link to subscribe:
Please note: we highly recommend our validators to subscribe to the newsletters, as this is one of the main ways to stay up to date with the important updates and latest changes about the chain.
What’s Coming Next?
We anticipate that the upgraded mainnet will better serve our users and fulfill more diverse purposes. Afterward, the center of attention will be launching our next plan for Phase 2 DRACO II Coin Issuance and Ethereum Virtual Machine. The recent enablement of IBC has offered a way to issue new coins using Solo Machine. Our next focus will be connecting ETH-based apps as well as smart contracts to the Crypto.org EVM Chain and providing an alternative way for native coin issuance. In addition, to further support the Crypto.org EVM Chain, Particle B will grant up to $100M to support projects building applications on Crypto.org EVM Chain as previously announced. The application is available here and we highly encourage the Crypto startup founders to apply! More details about the Phase 2 will be released in the near future, stay tuned for the update!
If you would like to participate in the network and be part of the journey, keep an eye on our mainnet blog and official Discord, so you don’t miss any announcements!
