Dev activity on missing features has been slow since the public announcement mid last year.
The C++ library as basis for a fast connection to Impala from Python and R seems indeed very promising.
Is Cloudera planning to further invest in this?
Or are there more appropriate options (maybe something like sparklyr)?

I can't comment on the Impala team's current priorities, but I would really like to see impyla decommissioned and hs2client to become the official Impala/Hive client for Python. We need help with

  • DB API 2.0 compliant interface
  • Kerberos and SSL support
  • Hive testing

It's not a short term priority for me, but these would be very nice things for a motivated contributor to do.

I don't really see a relationship to Spark or sparklyr, could you clarify that last point?

The Impala team isn't actively working on this, mostly because we don't have time. That may change in the future but it isn't on our immediate roadmap. However, as Wes said, some of the next steps would be great tasks for "motivated contributors".

Would compiling hs2client against https://github.com/facebook/fbthrift and not Apache Thrift automatically add Kerberos and SSL support?

I think working out that SASL would make this more accessible, particularly since it's a hive default. But hardly any C++ experience.
